Let’s get this week’s Poll Post for our 3 weekly polls rolling along by starting off with the Stones poll, which enters week 1,189 of voting. For this week’s poll we’ll ask: Rate the Stones song “Hey Negrita”,from zero (lowest) to 10 (highest).
“Hey Negrita” From the video: Billy Preston, Mick Jagger and Bill Wyman. Bill looks like he’s thinking to himself: ‘Why is Mick dressed up like a clown?’... Well, I know the fans wondered this, anyway.
Okay, for this week's song to rate we return to the Ron Wood years, and let's go all the way back to the very beginning of his time in the Stones, with a song that he wrote the music to, but of course he wasn't credited for it. In fact, this was the second time this happened to him before he was an official Stone (but by the time the song was released, he was officially in the band), as he also came up with the music for "It's Only Rock n Roll (But I Like It)" (which was his song that he planned to use on his solo album, until Mick stole it away from him. Even worst than having the song stolen away by MJ, was that he wasn't even credited for writing any of the song, either, and it was his song!)... While Mick Jagger wrote all of the lyrics to “Hey Negrita”, Keith Richards had nothing to do with the song’s creation, but of course he got the writing credit instead of Ronnie (the man just had no shame when he and Mick stole writing credits for songs that other band members wrote, and for this one, only he and MJ were the only ones who got paid for writing the music that they didn’t even write). So, what else is new?
Ronnie had the riff written long before he realized it would become a Stones song. He played the riff at his audition for the band to replace Mick Taylor - and perhaps that's why he got the gig with the group. If so, okay then, as the long-time payoff of being in the Stones was worth a lot more than what he would had been paid for the song’s writing credit. But still, that doesn’t make any of that BS right…. But Ron didn't have any lyrics for the song when he played it for the Glimmers. But Mick and Keith liked the riff and they used it and Mick wrote the song’s lyrics alone. At first it was believed by fans that Mick wrote this about his wife, Bianca, who was Latin American, and the song was written about somebody from that part of the world, along with its somewhat sexist lyrics. But MJ later claimed the song wasn't about her when asked later on, as the gal in the song was a hooker. Along with Ronnie's riff, the rest of the music, like the keys, etc, came from Billy Preston, who also wasn't credited for his work.
On another note, for whatever reason, this song, which is clearly a funk tune, is said to be a Reggae number by the Stones. Give me a break, its pure Latin funk sounding to me! There’s a hint of Reggae in the song’s flow, but’s it mainly a funk number…. The lineup heard playing on this song is: Mick Jagger: Lead Vocal; Ron Wood: Lead Electric Guitar, Backing Vocal; Keith Richards: Rhythm Guitar, Backing Vocal; Bill Wyman: Bass Guitar; Charlie Watts: Drums and Percussion; with Billy Preston: Piano, Marimba, Organ, Backing Vocal; and Ollie Brown: more Percussion. Last week at the Stones poll we voted on this question: Rate the Stones song “Short and Curlies”, from zero (lowest) to 10 (highest).
“Short and Curlies” is the Stones song we rate last week
In last week's poll, "Short and Curlies" turned out to have its votes landing all over the place, from all the way down to zero and all the way up to 10! It's top rating was an 8, taking in 34.2% of the vote, and most of the song's ratings (just over 90%) were between 7 and 10..... Okay, let’s take a look at this week’s Classic Rock Poll, where we enter week 828 of polling, and just to remind you if you missed last week’s Poll Post, we are now only voting in the main Rock Poll from here on out. Yes, just one Rock poll question asked per a week, and no more Video or VS polls, unless they are run as the main Rock question of the week. For this week’s Rock poll, we are in the closing week of asking this multi-week question: What is the greatest long running Rock Song (at least 10 minutes long), ever? (Part 4 of 4).
Long running Rock songs
Okay, so we go into Part 4 of this very popular poll question, and we will have 26 songs to choose from that made it into this final round. Not too much more to say about this other than once again, we fans picked some excellent songs for the last round of voting. To vote in this week's poll and see the 26 songs that you will get to choose from, just click here: Classic Rock Poll .
In last week's voting, for once (for this multi-week question, anyway) some very close voting on the many songs, with 4 songs seeing at or more than 5% of the vote - and still not making it into the final round since they didn't land in the Top 10. No more than 10 songs can be picked each week for any 4 part poll (unless there's a tie for the last spot).
Now, when I list the songs here that made the cut from Part 3, I'm no longer gonna note the song's percentage of the vote here for multi week polls, since it's confusing and really means nothing. I'll just post the songs in the order they finished last week, so here they are: Voodoo Chile - Jimi Hendrix Experience, When The Music's Over - The Doors, Shine On You Crazy Diamond – Pink Floyd, Rock & Roll (Live) - Lou Reed, Free Bird - Lynyrd Skynyrd, Get Ready - Rare Earth, Karn Evil 9 – Emerson, Lake & Palmer, Whipping Post (Live) – The Allman Brothers Band, The World Is A Ghetto - War and Thick As A Brick – Jethro Tull.
To see the song's percentages, or total vote counts, and also what songs didn't make the final cut and which 5 songs just missed out on making it into Part 4... just check out the full final results at the following link: Classic Rock Poll, week 827.
Time to finish up with this Poll Post talking about this week’s Beatles Poll, where we enter week 579 of voting and week 13 of rating the Beatle songs. The question we will answer this week is: Rate the Beatles song, “Octopus's Garden”, from zero (lowest) to 10 (highest).
“Octopus's Garden” Ringo hanging out in one
Since we have now rated songs written by 3 of the 4 Beatles, why not this week rate a song written by the only Beatle that we haven't gotten to yet, that being Ringo Starr. I guess the only problem is, that while in the Beatles, Ringo did sing lead on several songs, and usually that was for one song per LP. But he only wrote 2 songs while in the band, and for one of them, "Don't Pass Me By", only one other Beatle played on the song, as it was more so a Ringo solo song. But on his second song, which we will rate this week, "Octopus's Garden", all 4 Beatles do play on this number, so let's go with it.
The song was first worked on by Ringo when the Get Back/Let it Be sessions were taking place in January of 1969, as we see in the movie made of the sessions that became the Let it Be LP, Ringo is at the piano with George Harrison, going over how the song might be worked out - music wise. John Lennon then joined them playing the drums (not shown in the movie) and the song's beat came from that. So, where Ringo wrote most or all of the lyrics to this song, that wasn’t the case for its music. The drum beat came from John (a surprise, as you would think that would come from Ringo, since he wrote the song and he was the band’s drummer) and then some more of the music came from George. But George wanted the full writing credit for the song to just go to Ringo (who actually came up with the guitar part for the song and he actually played guitar on the song's acetate record), since even the song's music at first came from Ringo. John agreed that was how it should be - and how it turned out. Most of the song was then recorded on April 26, 1969, other than some final vocals were added in a short time after that, and the song was then released on Abbey Road in September, 1969…. The lineup for this one is: Ringo Starr – Lead Vocal, Drums, Percussion; John Lennon – Rhythm Guitar, Percussion, Backing Vocal; Paul McCartney – Bass Guitar, Piano, Backing Vocal; George Harrison – Lead Guitar, Sound effects, Backing Vocal.
Now, I usually end talking about whatever song we're rating at this point, but not this time, as I got a couple of things more to write about for this song and its video. First, for the song only, you may ask, 'Keno, are you trying to end the current streak the Fabs have - of all their songs that we have rated so far, receiving a rating of a 10, end this week?' Well, of course not, even if we all know that sooner or later that streak will come to an end and if it happens this week, so be it. While most Fab songs are 10s, several of them aren't, and IMO, chances are this one isn't (but what do I know, I’m wrong every so often when I guess something like this in advance). Well, I won't rate it a 10 myself, I'll more than likely give it a 9, but in saying that, I think I just increased the song's chances of seeing a 10 score, as some who read this just might rate it higher since I did state that. Of course, no matter what I say, none of my words matter, you just give it what you think it really should be rated… But just remember one thing, this poll is for Beatle fans only, so if you hate the Beatles, well that means you must hate Rock n Roll, and you have no business in voting in this poll if that’s the case, as this is a Beatle fan poll only. Of course, I'm talking to the one person who votes a zero rating every week, in all the Beatles polls whenever a rating is being called for, and doing that means you’re not a fan and you're only here to spam the poll, and spammed votes are never allowed and always removed. So, stop wasting your time. Plus the same deal goes to the Beatle fan who has been trying to spam the Beatles poll for years now. This person votes the total opposite of the Beatle hatter voter who always votes a zero, as this Fab fan will vote a 10 everytime, and then tries to vote in the same poll again, and again, and well, on average he votes for another 10 rating, like 25 times in a row, over and over again for the same poll choice, week in and week out, yet none of his votes have counted here for several years now, as he was blocked years go. But he always shows up anyway (just a note, while this fan is blocked from all voting, the Beatle hater isn’t, since that person only spams the Beatle poll and votes clean in the other polls. Oh well, I guess the Beatle fan spammer has too much free time on his hands, but how can he not realize that none of his votes will ever be counted? Some people!).
Now about the video linked to at the voting page. First, and as I always remind you, we aren’t rating the video, just the song, and you already know why the video is there.... But anyway, this isn't a bad song at all, and while Ringo has said that he didn't mean for the song to be a children's song at first, the way it ended up, it sure sounded like one, especially after its cartoon came out! Yes, the cartoon video that is link to at the voting page, is from the late-1960s TV Beatles cartoon series that was on for 3 or 4 years back then. That was one very smart show, as it helped to indoctrinate little children into becoming Beatle fans, and I'm surprised it wasn't banned for that reason by the older generation who mainly hated the Beatles (I mean, the horrors, showing that shocking music drug noise connected to the Beatles, being made, to 4 and 5 year olds!).
Anyway, these cartoons, while no longer on TV, still works a bit today in getting kids to dig the Fabs, as they are on YouTube... Back when my then youngest grandson was about 5 or so, I found a few of these cartoons on YouTube, and it was this very cartoon of "Octopus's Garden" that I sat him down to watch one morning. He wasn't into the Beatles or any of my music at all, so it was time to indoctrinate the boy. I didn't tell him it was the Beatles when I told him to watch this cartoon on the computer, I just told him that I wanted to see if he liked it. My grandson back then, like all 5 year olds, was totally into all cartoons, and I just knew he would dig this. So I walk away to give him his space and wondered how long it would take for him to realized it was a Beatles cartoon that he was watching. Then when the song was played in the cartoon, I came back to my boy at the computer and he says to me, "Gramps, I've heard this song before, it's a good song! Isn't it a song you play, is it the Rolling Stones?" I told him no, but yes, it's a song I played. So I asked him who else did he think was singing the song and he says to me that "I don't know, but it's those guys in the cartoon, see, they are playing it". So I asked him again, "Who are those guys?", and he tells me again he didn't know, but the one singing it was called “Ringo”. So I told him they were the Beatles, and he says to me "No they aren't, I don't like the Beatles!". "Sure you don't" was my reply. After the cartoon ended, he runs upstairs and then runs back down and says to me, "That poster you have up in your room, isn't that the Beatles?". So I told him yes (the photo in the poster is from the band’s very last photo shoot they had, taken outside at the front door to Lennon’s home). "I knew those guys in the cartoon wasn't them, the Beatles have long hair and beards, so stop trying to fool me grandpa". Yes, how dare me trying to do that to my kid! Anyway, to close out this long story, Coop just turned 22, 2 weeks ago, and no, he still isn't a Beatles fan, or a Stones fan (other than he loves SFTD since he was about 10 or so), nor a Classic Rock fan. Yet there are many Beatle, Stones and classic rock songs he does like since he grew up hearing my music playing in the house often enough, and while he won't admit he's a Beatle fan, well, he is, and yes, I think that cartoon helped in making him one…. Last week at the Beatles poll we answered this question: Rate the Beatles song, “For You Blue”, from zero (lowest) to 10 (highest).
“For You Blue” picture sleeve
Once again, another Beatles song (“For You Blue”) scored a 10 for its top rating, but the results were close for spots 8 thru 10 (no question, as 93.4% of the vote came from those 3 spots). Plus as we've been seeing for the last 3 weeks now, another low percentage of the 10 rating, this time at only 31.5%, the lowest rated 10 for the Beatles rating song polls yet, but for the third week in a row – and I'll say once again that, a 10 rating is still a 10 rating. To see the full, final results from this poll, just click on here: Beatles Weekly Poll – week 578. Or, you can also check out the results at The Beatles Song Ratings and Standings page, located at the domain’s Lennon Site.
So, did you see last week's list of inductees to the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame for 2022? Do check then out if you haven’t yet, as for next week's Rock poll we will vote on the picks and ask who was the worst pick and never should have gotten in. Truth is, there's no other Hall of Fame on Earth that has this problem in letting in people in who shouldn’t be in it, sometimes several a year are let in to the Rock Hall that have no business being in a Rock Hall of Fame. I guess that’s why we always see a big turn out each year when I ask this poll question, so do make sure to return here next week and vote in this poll - and while you’re here right now, please do vote in this weeks 3 new polls, too!
I hope all of you have a great week ahead!
