A very unusual cast of characters. Lou Reed and John Cale, both classically trained, both making ungodly noises with VU with little to show from their earlier formal training. Cale's viola drones on the first 2 LP's were chilling to say the least. Maureen Tucker always played drums standing up, and she beat the hell out of the kit with mallets, adding to the noise. Sterling Morrison was perhaps the only conventional rocker, playing mostly standard guitar riffs and doubling on bass. He earned a PhD in literature after the band initially split up and later commandeered a tugboat, which isn't too surprising given the dearth of job opportunities associated with an advanced lit degree. After a stressful European reunion tour, band members were not eager to carry on any further with Reed, their legendary front man having rubbed everyone the wrong way and then some.
