Steel Wheels and Voodoo Lounge

Today (Wednesday) was yet another good snowy winter day at my place to get back to finishing up re-rating the Stones albums, and it was Steel Wheels and Voodoo Lounge that were the 2 LPs up next. As has been the case since last spring when I started this long process, after I get done, every Stones LP has improved in their ratings (but one), and for these 2 the same deal applied.

Steel Wheels has never been a favorite of mine, in fact for me it's their second poorest album made and the most disappointed one released. It got some great reviews upon it's release in 1989, and after I got my hands on it I never could understand why. It's one of the few Stones LPs that I never play, and as it spun today, after the first 2 songs played, which are great, I was totally bored playing the remaining ones and wanting to turn it off and do something else. SW just always leaves me with very little to desire hearing.

There are 3 excellent numbers on this one, as noted, it starts off great enough with 2 of the 3 best songs on the album, that being "Sad, Sad, Sad" and "Mixed Emotions", while the other better than average ditty is "Rock in a Hard Place", with this one sounding like it would have fit well on the DW LP.

But overall SW did much better with it's new rating of 6.44, and while still in second to last place on my rating list, that's still a lot higher a score than I gave it the last time around, too.

1994's Voodoo Lounge was up next and playing this one today was the total opposite to playing SW, as I not only enjoyed every track but one on here, but I had to think to myself, why don't I play this one more often?

I guess that I still look at VL as a modern day Stones LP, even if it was made 25 years ago. I mean, it really was made light years ago, but that was also just 4 studio albums ago for the Stones, too. But when I play this one I can't wait to hear what's up next! Best songs on here are the kick off song, LIS, along with "Blinded By Rainbows", as I always been a sucker for a great anti-war song that carries with it a ton of feelings, and this one has that... John Lennon would have loved this song had he heard it.... Yet on this LP, something happen as I rated it that hadn't ever happened before in my re-rating efforts, that being, that a former 10 song was demoted and no longer met the threshold that I go by for being a ten. That song was "I Go Wild", a number I still dig a lot and it still scored high anyway, at 8.8, but yes, it dropped down from it's 10 rating that it held since 2005. I was thinking that wouldn't happen to any song that I truly love, but yes, I guess the laws of averages caught up to my thinking today when it was this one's turn to play.

As has always been the case for this LP, the only 2 songs I don't care for are the 2 that Keith sang the lead on. Around this time, Keith's voice was totally shot and he sounded flat out sounded terrible singing lead. Perhaps co producer Don Was should have said something to him about this, or maybe he did and Keith didn't give a crap? Yet my rating for "The Worst" did a bit better this time around, and it still got a passing grade from me of 6.2. There is something to this song that I like, but there's also something missing to it, too. On the other hand, "Thru and Thru" I always hated and always looked at as one of the worst Stones songs ever made, and that didn't change any today, as Keith can't sing as a crooner, plain and simple, and he flat out sounds terrible on this one. I never understood how my fellow Stones fans like this number? What's to like with stuff like this one - even the music behind it puts me to sleep, as I like rock music and I just don't care for any of this night club jazzy crap at all.

But overall, VL improved in it's rating big time, now at 7.58 and it ties with EOMS in my rating standings for the number 14 spot.

You can take a look at my new ratings here: Stones Album Ratings

So now there's just 3 studio LPs left for me to re rate, and I half feel like doing them right now! But more than likely they will have to wait until next week for that. But overall, this is still a very fun job to partake it, Ronnie!
