It would be great if I still had the energy to run this joint like I used to, but I don't. While the poster in me is just like you and would like to see the Gasland web community continue on, the webmaster in me has been out of gas and running on flumes for a few years now, and I just can't do it anymore.
Two years ago when I decided to finally close this place down, it took me a long time to tell anybody here about my plans and I felt like I was in a closet until I did. It was only a true relief months later when I did let you Gassers and lurkers know that this would be so. I did offer here in a post to give the board away to anybody who wanted to place it on their own domain and run it 100% by themselves, but there was only one person who wrote me and considered doing this - until he did some research found out that besides a lot of extra work in running this busy board, that the monthly cost was a lot more than what it would cost to run a regular, "normal" web domain. You can get and operate a personal web site/domain for as little as $9.95 a month these days. But you are looking at a bit more than 5 times that amount to pay a host to park Gasland on their server (about $55/month) and that's only if you prepay for an entire year in advance, like I do. It would be an extra $20 a month (or $240 extra a year) on top of that if you paid for the server monthly. Then you got the other costs involved, and the cleanup time, plus there's always gonna be a problem poster who you will have to deal with, too, and well, in time most don't wish to have to deal with stuff like that. After 20 years time of doing this myself, I grew tired of it, too.
I agree that there won't ever be another Gasland, since in part it does reflect not only the posters, but yes, the boardmaster running it, too. Yet the other 2 or 3 Stones boards are the same way, and their boards reflect their boardmasters. Those of you Gassers who still wish to keep posting about the Stones, will find new homes at their boards I'm sure. I do realize those boards aren't set up like Gasx3, but you will still get used to them in time.
Plus, as I keep reminding everybody here, this board's URL will still see on average 4 new poll posts a month - made every Sunday night, just like it always has for the last 20 plus years - and you will still be able to reply to that post. I never did understand why that post never drew a lot of replies, since there's usually 5 different subjects in that one post to talk about each week. So I'm hoping that all of you will still check out this joint - which will no longer be call Gasland or be a Stones board - and instead will become a new rock poll board. I will be the only one who will be able to make new posts, but everybody will be able to reply to the posts. I just hope that happens, and that the polls stay strong, too, but if there isn't any interest shown, and the vote count goes down each week, then the polls could come to an end too in time. I just hope that isn't the case, since I still like running the polls and watching their outcome each week. So I do hope to still see and talk to you guys once a week after Feb 1 gets here! So I'll still be posting here each Sunday night - and so will manny, too... Will you? I sure hope so!
