A unique artist in every respect. I would consider him to be one of the "founding fathers" of psychedelic music. His "out there" guitar style still sounds like no one else, and he was famous for playing slide guitar high up on the strings with a Zippo lighter. His songwriting style often dealt with child-like themes and other flights of fantasy, while his on-stage presence involved long instrumental jams, dispensing with much of the studio material. With Barrett gone from Floyd and Gilmour in, it became a different band altogether. Not just guitar-wise, but it also provided Roger Waters with an opening to become the chief songwriter for the band. Contrary to common perception, Syd leaving Pink Floyd did not mark the end of his musical creativity. In fact, he wrote and recorded more songs solo than he did with his earlier band.
