Yes, my first single was "Light My Fire" in 1967.
BUT, I didn't buy my own albums until 1972. I was 15 working 16-hour Saturdays, and eventually Sundays also ---> 5:30AM to about 3 or 4 PM, and all holidays. That went on for many years.
Plus I would get increasing number of hours in the Summers on weekdays.
So that's how I got the money.
Anyway, my first time buying albums, I purchased SEVEN albums in on shot from the old Alexanders in Manhattan. And they were:
3 Stones albums = Exile On Main Street (which was brand new)
Sticky Fingers
Let it Bleed
3 Who albums = Tommy
Meaty Beaty Big & Bouncy
Who's Next
And finally === Cheech & Chong's first album. (They were about to release their 2nd)
Oh yeah, I became a serious music lover for sure.
What's funny is, I had a self-imposed boycott of all music listening from 1970 Labor Day weekend, till March of 1972 when I inadvertently discovered Casey Kasem's AMERICAN TOP 40. Wow, that deejay sounded so great, and he of course said what chart position each song was, which I've always liked hearing deejays of radio-past always say.
See, back to Labor Day 1970, I came back home from a weekend away only to discover my favorite music station WMCA, no longer played music. Their new format now was dial-log radio. Do that bummed me out, and The Beatles having just broke up, and all the shit going on in my life, I totally gave up music!
It was the discovery of AT40 that got me interested again. Then came the new single by my beloved Stones,"Tumbling Dice", which I was so crazy about, that my love for music was rekindled.
Thank you Casey Kasem and thank you Rolling Stones!!
