Your first records?

Shattered got me thinking of this when he noted in the Doors thread below that his first single purchased was "Light My Fire" for 69 cents! So I was thinking I'd ask what was the first record you ever had, and or the first single you brought, and the first album you had or paid for? I say both "had" and paid for since when you're young sometimes your parents got them for ya.

For me, I can't be sure which single was my first, but both of them that I can recall weren't rock records.. When I was a preteen boy, my dad got me "Go Away Little Girl" by Steve Lawrence 'cause I liked it so much. I can recall the moment he gave me it, talk about one happy kid! That one was easy listening and it came out in early 1962 and was my first brand new record of any kind. But I also got around the same time, the old, worn single of "The Old Lamplighter" by The Browns, that one came out and was a hit in 1960, and my oldest and wonderful sister Jeanne had it and saw how much I liked it - that she gave me her copy. I still to this day love both songs and may have gotten "The Old Lamplighter" first, not sure. Yet that one while also easy listening to my ears, was considered a country song somehow, and back in 1960 in NYC they didn't even have a country station on the air yet (not until around 1970 or so), yet this song was played often enough. Jim Ed Brown sang it with his 2 sisters in that trio and he was the lead singer, and yes the Browns were looked at as country, even if that song don't sound so country to me.... Jim Ed was one of those who was a heavy smoker all of his life and died of lung cancer just a few years ago, as did one of his sisters, too. But a great song indeed.

The first single I paid for in a store was "Judy in Disguise (With Glasses)", by John Fred and his Playboy Band. That one came out in 1967 (maybe '66?) and I recall that day in the store buying it. I used the money I earned from my newspaper route to buy it.

Does anybody recall these 3 songs? I bet the last one most of you know anyway.

My first album was a Xmas gift, the Beatles Rubber Soul, right when it came out, but my second oldest sister (the mean, nasty sister, but the one who made me a hippie, too) had also gotten it and for some totally stupid reason I was forced by her to sell my copy (the same sister who fooled me into selling my ticket to Shea Stadium that dad got us in '64 to see the Beatles play so her friend could go with her instead). So the next day I made a trade for 2 used Stones albums with the girl across the street. It was a great trade, yet I never got why I had to do that since my sisters had the 2 Stones LPs already too (but they weren't new records, either... plus for the record, when I was forced to give up my Beatles ticket, besides my sister doing all of my chores for 2 weeks, I got the Stones first LP for that, too, but that wasn't as great a deal of course... it was really a total rip off). Come to think of it, that had to be before The Beatles RS came out, too, so the Stones must have been my first LP... but I guess the bad memory of being ripped off by my middle sister and in seeing the Beatles historical and the first ever outdoor rock concert held, gets in my way of thinking on this... I still haven't gotten over that one, Ronnie!
