Stones weekly polls hits week 1000!!... plus more!

Well my Gassy friends, week 1,000 of the Stones poll is here! Holly crap, I never figured that a week 1000 would happen or be seen, as it sure wasn't a goal when I started these polls up; just getting a polling system up and running and one that would be successful for a few years – well that would have been good enough for me back in 1998 and the only true goal I had at the time.

So just exactly how long is 1,000 weeks anyway you might ask?... Well it's 19.1781 years! Almost as old as Gasland is (The Land of Gas becomes 20 years old in the first week of December). It has really been a long and interesting trip running these polls each week, and I'm still not totally out of new ideas for the weekly Stones poll either. But with that said, most of the best questions were asked well over a decade ago. So the Stones poll will still live on over at the Rock poll as the second or third Rock poll run there each week - at least until the Stones album VS polls finish up, and I hope all of you will still show up to vote in our reaming Stones polls each week. As long as everybody keeps showing up each week, I'll keep them going, and plus - over at the Rock poll, where time isn’t close yet to running out, I got several great questions ready to ask and run for the next few months as it is there, too. The only thing that would stop me from running these polls in the future is if most of you stopped showing up to vote in them. So I hope all of you who vote week in and week out, will still be around after next week when I won’t be able to program new weekly Stones polls at the Stones poll's usual spot on the poll menu any longer. But one Stones poll a week will still be run regardless.

With that all noted, let's talk about this week's last official Stones polls.... We've been voting in 3 Stones polls a week for several weeks now..... and for this final special 1,000th week, well let's run and vote in 4 of 'em! We will run 3 videos polls along with the usual album VS poll. Being this is it for the Stones weekly polls, I would love to see a record voter turnout for this week, the 1,000 and final Stones poll week at these Stones polls. So please do vote (we just missed setting new records at last week Stones polls as it was)! The highest vote count for any one Stones poll is 1291 votes cast. The record high vote count for the domain is 1674 at the Rock poll, and the top 10 highest polls (actually more like the top 20 or so) for votes cast at that poll all beats the Stones poll's highest numbers. In fact, even the top 5 Beatle polls beat the Stones polls best totals (even if overall the Stones poll was still the second most voted on poll)... but let's change those numbers this week, as last week we did put up some big vote numbers at the Stones poll to where the voting total counts are now a lot closer to the Beatles weekly polls top numbers and it’s now at where these last 4 polls can change some of those totals.

This week's first Stones poll question will ask this: Rate the Rolling Stones TV performance for “Carol”

So as noted, since this is week 1000 I decided to throw in an extra Stones video and go with the theme of guitar weaving, since the Stones with Brian and Keith were the very first two who started all of that in rock music. So for our '60s videos, or should I say TV performances, I’ll go with 2 real good ones, "Carol" and "It's All Over", and both of them are taken from live TV performances.

Let's first talk about the "Carol" clip... since I believe it will show up first in the poll’s order on the poll’s menu page (although since I wrote that and the polls have started, I see that I’m wrong on that, but what else is new?).

There's about 5 or 6 of these live takes of this song on YouTube and they are all from the very same June 25, 1964 Mike Douglas TV Show performance... but, for some reason, every one of them have the second song they played on the show that day included, and that other song was "Tell Me", but it wasn't played live that day and was poorly mined by the band - and yes, while they are both showed together here, the second song of course has no guitar weaving in it, either. But I didn't want to rate 3 '60s clips for this this week's polls, plus we had just linked to and talked here about this clip before (that is, the interview conducted at the end of it). So that extra stuff shows up in there shortly after the 3 minute mark in the clip... but... don't rate that part of this clip, as it's not to be considered at all in the ratings this week, as the rating is for the song and performance of "Carol" only. Plus again, where "Carol" is being played live, it's clear that "Tell Me" isn't live at all. So I actually suggest you pause your video of this at the end of "Carol" - and go vote first so your rating isn't affected by the second, poorer bit of what is shown on there (not that it’s that bad, but again, you can clearly tell it ain’t live, too. You can always go back and watch the second half of this clip after casting your vote, but again, please don't vote on it…. But yes, on this take of "Carol", we see some nice guitar weaving by Keith and Brian, and if you haven't seen this one in a while, you should enjoy it!

To check out this video and to cast your vote in this first poll, just click on: Stones Weekly Poll, and when you get to this page, choose “Poll 1” to vote on this question.

The Stones second poll this week will ask this: Rate the Rolling Stones TV performance for “It's All Over Now”

At first I was gonna go with the song "The Last Time" for this week, since in part it's the last time that we'll be able hold a Stones poll in the actual Stones poll slot, and that one was one of the very early great Stones guitar riffs that Brian Jones came up with; as good as any guitar riff ever heard in a Stones song (IMO). But I would like to see some high ratings for all the Stones polls this week, being that it's the official last week for ’em. But the only real TV performance of this song out there on YouTube has to be one of the worst examples of either a very bad TV director - or the Glimmers making an arrangement to only show them two while Bill - who sings the backing vocals, isn't shown a lot, and Brian, who plays that great lead riff throughout the song, is hardly shown at all! The TV production of this song is so bad that I would myself rate it about a 2 or 3 tops - since it's as bad as it can get in that regard, and I bet you fellow Gassy Stones fans would vote in the same matter on this one, too. So I figured it would be best not to vote on "The Last Time" for that reason. So the second ‘60s songs I did go with (and after I decided to go with 2 weaving guitar songs) was "It's All Over Now" (and hell - even that title also goes with this being the last time running questions at this Stones poll too - and I only realize it as I typed this out!). Anyway, I was gonna link to a TV performance of this that I've seen many times in the past which shows Keith playing the lead guitar at first, and then Brian takes over the lead about half way thru the song, and yes, that one shows us a true example of the 2 guitar weaving, too. But when I put the poll together on Saturday, I'm not sure what I did wrong when I set the link, but after I did set it, I checked to make sure the link worked, but it was linking to last week's video of for "Paint it Black" instead. I guess when I went to "cut" the link I copied last week's link by mistake instead and then in doing so lost the link to the video I was planning to link to. I knew I could find it again in a YouTube search, but when I did that - I first found a different live take of this number and after viewing it, I felt this one more interesting to view, as it’s a better live take of this song… well…. not better as far as the guitar weaving goes, but with this one there's no question they are playing live (I couldn’t be 100% sure on the other one), and Brian is playing the lead throughout the entire song on this one and there's really no true weaving here - even in the middle of the song where they usually do the most weaving, as Keith seems to only be playing the rhythm guitar throughout the number. But since this one is a 100% true live take of the band playing live, and it highlights Brian's live guitar playing very well, I decided to go with this one and never finished looking again for the first video that I had planned to use. It was a treat to see this live take, so it will be the version that we rate this week.

In this one, as usual, both Brian and Keith sing the backing vocals to the song along to MJ's lead vocal. The only thing I know about this performance is that in the very beginning it shows the song title incorrectly (it's noted as "Used to Love Her") and notes "1964" alongside the wrong title that shows.

To check out the video and to cast your vote in this second poll, click here: Stones Weekly Poll, when you get to this page, choose “Poll 2” to vote on this question.

For the Stones third poll running this week we will ask this: Rate the Rolling Stones video for “Harlem Shuffle”

This one is the official video for the Stones cover song, "Harlem Shuffle". This song is perhaps the best song on the otherwise disliked Dirty Work LP, and there's no need to sugar code anything else about this album (okay I will, since "Mixed Emotions" is a good tune too). But this video starts off with a short cartoon, and that cartoon keeps showing up here and there throughout the video. Looks like the Stones, with one exception, are totally enjoying themselves in this vid, with a lot of dancing and nice looking females hanging with the Boys. Really a nice job by the band on this - with the usual exception - and that is, as it always seems to be the case, that when it comes to making videos, that Charlie Watts doesn't seem to be having a good time at all; he seems to be totally bored in this one (just like all of the other ones) and acts like he doesn't want to even be in it (and I bet he didn’t). So what else is new, that's how Charlie is when it comes to stuff like this. I just wish he would just pretend to want to be in the clip for the sake of the band and us fans.

To check out the video and to cast your vote in this third video poll of the week, click here: Stones Weekly Poll, when you get to this page, choose “Poll 3” to vote on this question.

The Stones 4th poll running this week is where we will conduct the Stones album VS matchups, and this week’s question asks: Voodoo Lounge vs Steel Wheels, which album do you like the best?

vs

The "I Put a Voodoo Spell on You" Polls returns this week, featuring the 1994 LP Voodoo Lounge. VL hasn't had an easy time in these matches, and that’s been the case with all of the Stones modern day album releases. Just how bad has it been for their modern day LPs going up against their older LPs?... Well, all of them have losing records – every one, and while VL has the best record in these battles for any of the newer albums, it's still a losing one too, with 8 wins and 12 losses and in 15th place. If VL can win its remaining 4 matches, then it will be at .500 at least, and this week's battle should be winnable. Not that I'm not saying it's gonna win for sure, but it has a good shot going up against SW I would say. With that noted (and I'm wrong often enough in my poll predictions), Steel Wheels is having its own (big) problems in these battles, 4 spots down below VL, and near the bottom of the standings with only 3 wins and 16 loses.

Looking back at our 3 Stones polls last week, at the first poll we answered this question: Rate the Rolling Stones TV performance for “Paint it Black”

This Stones TV performance did very well in the voting last week, scoring a “10” for the top pick with 26.9% of the votes. Only one single voter gave it a poor rating, with a near record number of of fans voting in this poll last week!

To check out the full final results from this one, just click here: Stones Weekly Poll - week 999, poll 1. Or, you can check out and see how all of the other videos that we have rated in the past have done by going here: Stones Fans Top Pick Lists - Page 2, under “Video Ratings”.

Looking back at last week’s second Stones poll, the question was: Rate the Rolling Stones video for “Fool To Cry”

Heck, this video got even more votes than the “Paint it Black” poll saw (just 10 more, but still…), but didn’t do as great as PIB did, scoring a “8” for its top pick with 22.1% of the vote. You can view the final results from this second poll here: Stones Weekly Poll - week 999, poll 2. Or, like with the first vid, you can check out and see how all of the other videos that we have rated in the past have done (or even watch the other vids) by going here: Stones Fans Top Pick Lists - Page 2, under “Video Ratings”.

Looking back at last week’s VS Stones poll, the question asked was: A Bigger Bang vs Some Girls, which album do you like the best?

vs

This was the last time we could vote in “The Big Bang Polls”, as we finished up this series last week with its featured 2005 LP A Bigger Bang completing all 24 matches. Its final record goes down as 7 wins, 15 losses, and 2 ties. Right now it sits in 18th place in the standing – but even with no more battles to partake in, it’s final place in these standing more than likely will change, since the LPs around it still have matchup’s to battle in and more than likely VL will either move up or down from where it’s at right now before all is said and done with.

To see the final results from this last Big Bang poll, click here:Stones Weekly Poll - week 999, poll 2. Or, you can see the final results and check out the updated, current album standings at the Stones VS Page 1.

Okay, so let’s move on now to the Classic Rock Poll, where we enter poll week 640, and unlike the Stones poll, there’s another 360 weeks of polling to vote on for this one (or in other words, still a very long time to go). Because we’re running 4 poll questions at the Stones poll this week, we will just run the normal first Rock poll question and will again skip running the Rock VS poll for this week. That VS poll may or may not return next week, as I haven’t decided yet on that. So for this week’s Rock poll, after a few weeks of running polls about not feeling well and/or being sick, I think and felt that it's time we look at things in a more positive light, therefor, this week's Rock poll askes: What's the grooviest song that contains 'groovy' or 'groove' in its title?

Now this is gonna be a very groovy poll for sure! Yes, there aren't too many things that the 1960s hippys are remembered for besides their long hair and free love, but coming up with the word "groovy", which most felt was a new word that would disappear from our vocalically in a very short time. But it's a word that turned out to actually stick around longer than most of the '60s hippys and their long hair did. It may not be as popular a word today to say - but it's still used every so often, and it's still around, too. If anything it seems that it’s used today more so in the jazz music world than in the rock n roll world where the hippys mainly came from.

I must say that this has be the grooviest poll question I've ever asked or could ever ask, and it will go down as the most grooviest poll that we ever voted in, too. I came up with 16 groovy songs to list in this poll, so to vote in this very groovy poll, just click here: Classic Rock Poll, and when you get to this page, choose “Poll 1” to vote on this question.

Looking back at last week’s Rock poll, it asked: What's the best Rock song about a person who's either paranoiac, schizophrenic or bipolar?

Pink Floyd’s 2 songs listed (about their former leader, well the first one at least was about Syd, not sure about the second one) came in first and second in the voting. “Shine On You Crazy Diamond” was the top pick with only 6.4% of the vote (that low percentage tells you that yes, this poll had some very close voting in it), with “Brain Damage” placing at 6.2%. Third place went to “Manic Depression” by Jimi Hendrix at 6.1%, but to see the full final results from this poll, just click here: Classic Rock Poll 1, week 639. To see the Top 10 list from this poll only, and other top 10 listings from our past rock polls, go here: Top Ten Lists, Page, 14

We finish up this poll post as usual with the Beatles poll, where we enter week 393 of voting, and ask this new question: Beatles For Sale vs With the Beatles, which album do you like the best?

vs

Week 2 of the "Beatles on Sale" Polls, featuring the Beatles LP Beatles For Sale. BFS this week takes on With the Beatles, The Beatles second release album and these 2 LPs from 1963 are pretty even albums, so I got a feeling the voting will be real close in this matchup. Time will tell for sure.

To see the song list for each album, for Beatles For Sale, click on: BFS, and for With the Beatles, click here: WTB.

To vote in this poll, please go here: Beatles Weekly Poll.

In last week's Beatles poll we asked: Beatles For Sale vs A Hard Day's Night, which album do you like the best?

vs

This one was a somewhat close battle, to see which album won, just click here: Beatles Weekly Poll – week 392. Plus the results will also show up on the The Beatles' Albums Page over at the Lennon site.

So that does it for this week’s poll post and the very last of Stones weekly polls. It’s kinda sad that this one poll is all over, since it was the reason I wanted to get my Stones site and this message board on line in the first place. But while the Stones polls will move on over to the Rock poll next week for week 1001, I’m still feeling sad at the moment knowing that something else that has been a weekly thing in my life for just under 20 years – and I never once missed a week – even when I was away from home on vacations, is now coming to an end. I thank all of you for voting in this poll each week and I know that many of you have also been voting in this poll for many many years, too, and I bet you will also miss seeing the Stones poll here anymore. Yes, we will still have a Stones poll running on the domain, but will it still be the same having to run it and conduct it at the Rock poll? I hope so, but we shall see starting next week. In the meanwhile, please do vote in the final 4 Stones polls, as this is your very last chance to do so – for sure!
