RE: RE: RE: RE: Greatest musicians technically?

Vocals: The Beatles with four featured lead vocalists, and a more advanced use of harmonies. This made for a more variety from song to song. Mick gets kudos for being one of the best front men of his era, and ability to sing in a number of styles.

Lead & Rhythm Guitar: I call it a draw here. George and Keith on primary lead guitar were both perfect for the bands they were in, as were John and Brian. The Beatles songs tended to be more complex in their use of chords, but I give the Stones an advantage for overall energy.

Rhythm Guitar: Brian over John. Brian was a more of a second guitarist, stepping up on slide guitar and throwing in killer riffs every now and then. And Keith and Brian were pioneering in their use of weaving. John is no slouch, but more of a conventional rhythm player.

Bass: McCartney for his ability to play unique melodic lines while being a functional part of the rhythm section. Bill, great as he is was far more conventional, locking in with Charlie and anchoring the Stones sound.

Drums" Another draw. Both drummers played for the song and could swing as well, no small feat for a rock drummer. Ringo's use of hi-hat was one of the Beatles secret weapons. Charlie had a jazz finesse applied to rock & roll that made every song just a bit better than his competition could.

Harmonica: Both Brian and later on Mick. Lennon did a few things early-on but decided to drop the instrument after hearing what others were doing with it.

Creativity: Kudos to Brian for his pioneering use of instruments that had rarely been used by rock artists.

Keyboards: McCartney arguably the best on keys. Both bands used the best outside players when the need arose: Billy Preston, Nicky Hopkins, and Jack Nitzsche (sp?) among others

Technical skill / Virtuosity: Mick Taylor.'Nuff said!
