Is this a masterpiece??? ~~ What do y'all think?
Led Zeppelin may not be in my top-ten, but Physical Graffiti (1975) is a mother of a powerful album! The band was so incredibly tight here.
This album, their 6th studio, was intended to be a single album with 8 new songs, but when they finished the songs, they couldn't fit it all on one album --- too long. So they decided to make this a double album and include unreleased songs from their previous 3 albums, 7 more songs -- and MORE great stuff!
These are the 8 new songs ~~ this was supposed to be Physical Graffiti:
"Custard Pie" <----< wow! What an opening song!! Unique guitar work there from Jimmy, basic yet effectively aggressive drumming from Bonzo. There's even a little harmonica playing later on. What an opener!
"In My Time of Dying" <----< holy shit. What can I say about this gemstone! Magic! Power! Slide, drums, bass, Page & Bonham, ~~ Meet me, Jesus, meet me. Meet me in the middle of the air
If my wings should fail me, Lord. Please meet me with another pair.
"Trampled Under Foot" <----< a top-40 hit single. What a rocker, great drumbeat, all around excellent piece of rock music. This does remind me of The Doobie Brothers' "Long Train Comin'" which came out the same month.
"Kashmir" <----< a huge favorite among many people. Also showcases Plant's impressive lyric writing.
"In the Light" <----< John Paul Jones baby! And 'In the Light' has more dazzling (get it?😉) lyrics by Plant! This is especially good!! 🤗 And if you feel that you can't go on ~ And your will's sinkin' low ~ Just believe and you can't go wrong ~ In the light you will find the road.
"Ten Years Gone" <----< one of their best ballads. Robert Plant can really write some great lyrics!
"The Wanton Song" <----< Bonham especially outdoes himself here. And check out the guitar starting at the 2:30 mark.
"Sick Again" <----< I think this is a song about groupies? Anyway, this is one dynamite piece of R&R! Nice layers of guitars. Listening to this while driving might get you a speeding ticket! 😛
Oh yeah, what an album. Led Zep were at their pinnacle here! --- A total of 15 songs. 8 new and 7 not so new, and no real filler.
