Miss You/RSN/OOOH/Clash/Mono/Stereo/Fabs

Time to talk about our new Rock polls that we will be voting on this week, starting off as usual with the Stones poll, as we enter week 990 of this poll and as usual 2 brand new Stones polls will be conducted. The first Stones poll question will ask this: Rate the Rolling Stones video for “Miss You”

This week in the first Stones poll we return to the Stones video polls, and with just 10 weeks to go till the Stones poll finishes up at 1,000 weeks, for this first poll anyway, these video questions will more than likely be the very last series of questions asked and run for this main Stones polls.

For this popular question, we return to it asking about the 1978 disco like song "Miss You". I can't stand disco myself, but I always liked this number, and it's one of the few Stones songs that we can point our finger directly at Bill Wyman for making this song great, thanks to his fantastic bass line heard throughout the song. But while we do rate the song itself as a part of the video, the entire video overall is looked at when we do the rating, and you got to wonder why so little of Bill is shown in this one? But of course that was a normal (and a bad) thing with the Stones. They always would show a ton of the Glimmers and little of the other band members, and perhaps that’s why their videos are never rated as high as say the Beatles videos, or other rock band videos for that matter that we fans rate here on the domain. As usual we see a lot of MJ in this clip (and I'm not saying that we shouldn't - we should of course, he is the lead singer, I'm just saying they could/should show the rest of the band more often). Keith and Ronnie are shown equally together for the most part in this one, with just a bit more of Keith shown than Ronnie.

Then there's Charlie, who looks very strange throughout this one, but not only because of his new, very short and almost skin-head like haircut. But he has the very same exact half asleep look on his face while he keeps turning his head back and forth, right to left, in the very same way throughout most of the video. Charlie was of course entering the height of his heroin abuse days when this video was made - and it shows for sure here (that is, if you know what that look looks like). No, he didn’t look too well in this vid since he wasn't.

There will be a link to the video in the voting booth so you can view it before you vote. Do remember that yes, we are rating this video for this poll, so where I often say that the videos linked to at the voting booth are only there so you can hear the song before you vote - but don't vote on the video - well for this kind of question of course that doesn't apply at all, as you most definitely should vote 100% on what the video shown is all about for this question.

To cast your vote in this first poll, just click on: Stones Weekly Poll, and when you get to this page, choose “Poll 1” to vote on this question.

The Stones second poll is where we run the Stones album VS matchups each week, and this week’s VS question asks this: The Rolling Stones, Now! vs Out Of Our Heads, which album do you like the best?

vs or

The Rolling Stones, not Now!... but many moons ago! Polls returns this week featuring the 1965 LP The Rolling Stones, Now!, as it goes up against another ‘60s LP, Out Of Our Heads.

Both LPs enter their 21st matchup each here, and OOOH is now playing the role of "guest LP" for the third week in a row. For OOOH, its record is now at a very strong 15-5, good for 7th place in the standings. This week's host LP, TRSN, has a winning record too, at 12-8 and sits in 11th place, only half a matchup out of the Top 10.

To see the song list for each album, for The Rolling Stones, Now!, click on: RSN, and for Out Of Our Heads, click here: OOOH –U.S. or here: OOOH-UK. Plus remember when you vote, to pick the OOOH LP that you know best (either the UK or U.S. release but not both) when comparing this LP against TRSN.

To cast your vote in this second Stones poll, just click on: Stones Weekly Poll, and when you get to this page, choose “Poll 2” to vote on this question.

Looking back at our 2 Stones polls last week, at the first poll we answered this question: Emotional Rescue vs Out Of Our Heads, which album do you like the best?

vs or

Nope, this poll wasn’t too close at all as OOOH beat up ER… but how badly? To find out, just click here: Stones Weekly Poll - week 989, poll 1. Or, you can see the final results and check out the updated, current album standings at the Stones VS Page 1.

Looking back at last week’s second Stones poll, the question was: Bridges To Babylon vs Beggars Banquet, which album do you like the best?

vs

Well my Gassy friends, something happened at this poll last week that in 988 weeks before never once happened before. The all-time record for largest landslide win for this poll (and for any poll ever run on the domain) was broken last week in this poll as Beggars Banquet just beat the living crap out of what most fans would say is the worst Stones release since Dirty Work, that being B2B (I would say the third worst LP since DW myself). The old record was set back in 2009 when Sticky Fingers went up against Dirty Work in this same series and SF won with 99.2% of the vote. In fact for this series, up until now, DW held the record for I believe the top 5 worst showings. But after tonight, the top spot for worst showing in a single matchup is now held by B2B, as it only scored 0.4% of the vote last week against BB! Wow, I expected B2B would get beat-up bad in this matchup before I ran this question (and so did you), but no, I didn’t expect a new record like this would be set, either. Heck, I actually feel bad about this since IMO, B2B while not that great, is still light years better than DW any day of the year, and I rather see DW hold that record. But no, B2B now holds the record – one that I got a feeling may never get broken ever again, unless DW can retake the title in one of its only 2 matches that it has left to be voted on. But its 2 last battles will be against 12x5 and Blue & Lonesome, and while I expect both LPs to win against DW, neither one is a powerhouse LP and I got a feeling this record loss last week will never be surpassed again. But you know the old saying – never say never.

You can view the final, record result from this poll here:Stones Weekly Poll - week 989, poll 2. Or, just as is the case with the first poll, you can see the final results and check out the updated, current album standings at the Stones VS Page 1.

Let me note one last thing about the Stones weekly polls, since there's only 9 more such polls to run after this week. If you have been paying close enough attention to this Stones VS album series, you know that we won't be totally done with these matches in 9 weeks’ time. But if you know me well enough, and after 20 years of some of you reading Gasland, some of you do know me well enough - and well no, I don't leave things hanging. So every matchup that needs running after 9 weeks passes will still be run. At this point, more than likely they will just be run as the third Rock poll of the week over at the Rock Weekly Polls until all of the matches are finished up. So yes, we actually have more than just 9 weeks of Stones polls to run, and even if the program only supports 1,000 weeks for each poll, there is always a way around things like this, and/so until every single matchup is completed, the Stones album VS series will keep on going, it just won't be held at the Stones poll anymore since there won’t be a Stones poll anymore to run.

Over at the Classic Rock Poll, this week we enter poll week 630, and we run 2 poll questions a week at this one too, and the main Rock poll will continue again this week to look at the most underrated member from a major rock band, as we been doing for the last few weeks. So this week’s question asks: Who was the most underrated member of The Clash?

While I never been a big Punk Rock fan, there were a few such bands that I liked a lot, and the Clash were one of them. How could you be an antiestablishment person like me and not like the Clash? It wasn’t possible! But okay, like a lot of my fellow Stones fans, I too didn't care for that one song they recorded ("1977") where they put the Stones (and the Beatles, and Elvis) down, but hey, even us Stones fans do that from time to time, too.

The Clash started out in 1976 in London. They are mainly remembered for the classic lineup of lead vocalist/rhythm guitarist Joe Strummer, lead guitarist/lead vocalist Mick Jones, bassist Paul Simonon, and drummer Nicky "Topper" Headon. But there were 4 other official members of the band too, after Headon was let go in 1982, and then Jones was fired in the next year (2 very stupid moves indeed!). They finally disbanded in 1986 after never really rebounding from those moves. But they were the kings of Punk and the most successful Punk band around…. Ever.

I think most fans agree that their 5th studio album Combat Rock, was their best LP, released in 1982, just before Headon and Jones were let go. They would only release one more LP after that, which many felt was lacking, Cut the Crap. As it was, most of the music played on the final album was performed by session musicians and not the actual band. So if ever an LP was mistitled, it was that one, since it (and the band) was full of crap without the 2 guys who were let go.

Like all major bands that break up, there were talk that the Clash would reunite sooner or later, but Strummer's sudden death in 2002 of a heart attack put an end to all of that.

So who do you feel was the most underrated in this group? All of the official members of the band will be listed at the voting booth, including the 4 other guys that I didn’t write about above. Just click here to vote: Classic Rock Poll, and when you get to this page, choose “Poll 1” to vote on this question.

At the second Rock poll this week, known better as the Rock VS poll, we will vote on this question: 'Mono vs stereo, which sound do you prefer to hear on your records?

A few months ago we had a debate here about mono vs stereo sound that was started by Jaded Faded and just how much better is mono or stereo sound on our records. It has always surprised me that so many rock fans love mono sound - even prefer it to stereo. But is that point of view for real? I'll never get it myself, but I often wounded how many really do dig mono sound over stereo, so it's about time I ask that question in the Rock Poll and find out.

Which sound do you like better? To cast your vote, just click on Classic Rock Poll, and when you get to this page, choose “Poll 2” to vote on this question.

Looking back at last week’s first Rock poll, it asked: Who was the most underrated member of The Mamas & The Papas?

This one was close only between 2 of the group members, Mama Cass and Denny Doherty, as the 2 took in 72% of the vote between them. But who got picked first? To see the final results, just click here: Classic Rock Poll 1, week 629. You can also check out the results from when we asked this same question for other bands, too, with all of the picks listed together on the top of this page Top Ten Lists, Page, 14, although for this one listing it ain’t a Top 10 list at all.

In last week’s VS Rock poll, we answered this question: '“Paranoid” by Black Sabbath vs “Brain Damage” by Pink Floyd, which song that deals with Paranoia & Schizophrenia is better?

VS
.

Very close voting in this one. To see which song about paranoia and schizophrenia people came out on top, just click here: Rock VS Poll, week 627. You can also check out the final results at the VS Classic poll results page at the Classic Rock site, by clicking here: VS poll page 3, list page 15.

Okay, so it’s time to finish up the poll post now and as usual, with the Beatles poll, where we enter week 383 of voting, and ask this new question: Of the Beatle songs that Ringo Starr sang lead on, which one was best?

Last week was Ringo's birthday, so yes, I should had run this poll question last week. But while I might know offhand when John Lennon's birthday is, I really don't know when the other 3 Beatles birthdays are, so that's why this poll is being run this week instead (after I learned here at Gasx3 about his birthday being last week).

Ringo sang lead vocal on 11 Beatles songs when they were still a band, three of which he wrote or co-wrote. But we have 12 songs listed in this week's poll. That's because the 12rh song, "If You’ve Got Trouble', which was a Lennon/McCartney number, was supposed to be on the Help LP... but was deemed lacking and was never released, not at least until Anthology 2 came out in 1996, long after the Fabs broke up. So since it was finally officially released years later, it will be listed. But then there's a 13th song that Ringo sang the lead on when he was in the Beatles, called "Taking a Trip to Carolina". It's a song he wrote during the Let it Be sessions. Besides his singing the lead on it, he even played guitar on it, too (really, no joke!) – but - it wasn't a completed song at all (its running time is less than a minute long). The only recording of it was released on the Fly on the Wall bonus disc to the Let it Be Naked release. So while one could argue that it was officially released regardless, well, it ain't a true song and I'm not listing it in the poll's choices. But there is a link to it above if you never heard it before and got around a minute of your life to waste. Truth being, all of the crap on Let it Be Naked never should have been released in the way it was, but you can't fault Ringo for this one, either. Blame Paul only for that mess to be released; had it been put together in the way the Stones put together the extra songs later added to EOMS or SG LPs, then that would have been fine, but it wasn't and instead was made like a new separate LP and as the original LIB was never made - including Paul excluding Lennon songs. That was a terrible and BS move on Paul's part, and something I can at least say that I wasn’t surprised seeing Paul doing. Classless on his part, but that's why some of us Beatles fans have a love-hate feeling for Paul, as it's right up his alley to do something like that. Still, as a fan I forgive him for doing that, even if I'll never like his doing crap like that, either. But anyway, I’m going off subject, as this poll is about Ringo, not Paul, so why talk about Paul (but I got a Paul question lined up for next week anyway, so I will talk about him in a more positive way next week).

To vote in this week’s Ringo-Beatle poll, please go here: Beatles Weekly Poll.

In last week's Beatles poll we asked: What is the Beatles most sexually explicit lyric?

Very very close voting in this one! Lennon only had one lyric listed in this poll, and it took first. To see the final results, just click here: Beatles Weekly Poll – week 382.

Well that takes care of another poll post. Seems hard to believe that in 10 short weeks the Stones poll will be at 1,000 weeks. My gosh, time really does go by so damn fast! But as usual I thank all of you for voting in our polls.
