The first 3 Four Seasons singles were, for the time, over the top novelties and even a bit radical sounding. They were a doo-wop group of sorts but with a twist all their own. The likely reason Frankie opted for "castrato" on the chorus of "Walk Like a Man" was that it stuck with the winning formula of "Sherry" and "Big Girls Don't Cry". After that the group seemed to mature in their sound and subject matter for songs as well. I have a CD compilation by the original Four Lovers, and Valli sings mostly in his tenor voice although there are traces of the future Four Seasons sound here and there. De Vito is quite an accomplished guitarist on those tracks, spitting out some rapid fire jazz licks. Massi is on some of the later tracks but Gaudio hadn't yet joined. His songwriting approach geared to Valli's voice was the big difference in the group's later success.
