In due time, manny, i'll give a more thoughtful expose, elaborating in depth and waxing eloquently with many many EXAMPLES, but not tonight-ahhhh no time, (and not in the right state of mind)! In brief, I'm with you on british bands in terms of sheer enjoyment. I love so many of them, all the ones from the 60s/70s but just as much the ones from later (e.g. My Bloody Valentine, Slowdive, Spacemen 3, Radiohead, Travis, Jesus and Mary Chain, Smiths, Joy Division, Cocteau Twins, etc....!) As a matter of fact, maybe i should revise my opinion...
But no, really, as much as i just love listening to the amazing stuff from across the pond i still feel like american bands are rougher but tougher somehow, experimenting more and pushing the boundaries, deeply influencing those british bands who then can usually make a sweeter and longer lasting melody out of all those ideas and then present it back to us so that we seriously enjoy it... but technically, everyone has always come to america to actually record and to take advantage of studio quality, that has to count for something too, right? Abbey Road studios notwithstanding, albums like Aftermath, Exile, and so many more were actually recorded and mixed in LA or Nashville, there's a reason for that to this day...okay, I'm going to finish because this is not my usual style. MOre to come.
