Maya is the world of duality in which we live - it's the illusory world of matter, what we understand to be reality in every day life. Many people believe that they ARE their bodies, thoughts and emotions, rather than that they are a pure centre of consciousness that resides in a body and has thoughts and emotions. The intention is to move beyond the illusory world, while living in it, to not get caught up in the trappings of materialism. This is the reason why people meditate at regular times during the day, often having an alarm set as a reminder to stop their outer activities for a few minutes.
