I don't know if I have ever read or heard Lennon comment on his own playing specifically. I suspect McCartney was probably the best guitarist in the Beatles. For me his playing on 'Taxman' is better and more inventive than anything anyone else in the band did on guitar, when it comes to a lead break that is. 'Blackbird' inspired by Bach is pretty impressive as well, you know, the use of the pedal note.
Yes a debate on what constitutes a musical 'genius' is not likely to get us very far, too subjective. Still as you have said elsewhere, even when we disagree we should be positive. So, John Lennon was a songwriter with few equals in rock.
