There are different lists out there with different numbers, and while the Stones were never looked at as the best of the top album sellars, that was never really totally true. On the list of best-selling music artists ever, they come in at 14th best, at 200 million albums sold. The Beatles are in first with over 600 million sold, with Elvis Presley a close second. Michael Jackson is third, but very much behind the Fabs and Elvis by about 250 million each. Meatloaf is at 80 million sold and in 80th place.
But, more than half of the Meat's album sales have come from Bat Out of Hell alone, and the Stones have no album that has sold anywhere near as much as that one has sold. It still today sells about 200,000 copies per year and has sold an estimated 43 million copies worldwide, including 14 million in the United States.
The Stones biggest selling album is Hot Rocks. It has sold around 16 million copies, with 12 million copies sold in the U.S., which was one of the few places where it was released for about 20 years. It wasn't released in the UK until the '90s and has sold about 2 million copies there. I also saw another list in the past that claimed HR has sold around 20 million copies, but of course I can't find it tonight. But the 12 million copies sold in the U.S. by HR was from about 10 years ago, too, and it still sells good today.
