Under My Thumb video/Soup Polls/Solo artists/more

We get our weekly poll post underway for our 5 weekly polls as usual with the Stones poll, where we enter week 951, and as usual, we will run 2 different Stones polls in this one week. So this week’s first question asks this: Rate the Rolling Stones video for "Under My Thumb" (Click here for the video)

This week, since the official video put out by the modern day Stones only a few years ago for this song - totally sucks (just like all of the official modern day Stones videos made of their '60s songs in the last few years, totally suck), we will instead go with what fans have looked at as, and what use to be used as the official video for this song years ago. Guess the band couldn’t secure the rights to this semi live performance, or more than likely, they just didn't try to, and in the last minute put together that crappy video that shows nothing but an updated copy of their logo (a logo that didn’t even exist when the song came out). I'm sure if we rated that official vid it would get a zero or maybe a 1 at best, since such a terrible job was done in putting it together.

But yes, this clip is what most of us fans think of as far as a video for this song goes, when we watch this live performance. It was made for the TV show Ready Steady Go, which many of us remember from years ago as being one of our MTV like shows back then, as far as seeing rock music on TV went in the '60s. Shortly after the song was released in 1966, the Stones appeared on this show and performed this number. What was common around this time with Rock bands on TV, although the music was played live on stage here by the band, the recorded studio music from the song was used instead on the broadcast in its place, while MJ's live vocals was left intact to what he sang on the show. So that alone makes this sound like a true Rock video and not a live performance.

But anyway, there's no rule set saying we can't rate unofficial videos for this poll, and that's what we are doing this week, and it won't be the last time we’ll do this, too, it's that or give super low rating to all of their '60s song video’s. Why should we rate the now “official” videos that suck when these cool films made years ago for the '60s songs are still out there to be seen? Plus they are what we old time fans remember; they were why we became Stones fans in the first place, since they were cool, unlike their replacements. If the Stones management was smart and not so damn lazy and cheap, they would secure the rights to these old gems, since the crap they put out instead as the officially videos for their classic '60s songs, sure aren't even close to being gems.

The song "Under My Thumb" itself was one of those '60s Stones numbers that had Brian Jones all over it, and like so many other '60s Stones songs, never would have been a hit without what he contributed to writing the music to the song (which of course he wasn't credited for). Besides playing guitar along with Keith on here, he also played percussion, along with piano, and the lead instrument on the song, the Marimbas, which was what made the song stand out in the way that it did and become a fan favorite, even if UMT was never released as a single. Up till this time, there was only one other Rock song that featured the Marimbas on a Rock song, and that number had also been released and recorded at the same time as this song, that being the Stones “Out of Time’ and of course, the instrument was also played by BJ on there, too. BTW, the great Ian Stewart doesn't appear anywhere on this track, as incorrectly credited by the Wikipedia site, along with all the other many other errors reported at that site about the Stones. Talk about fake news, indeed, that site is full of misinformation when it comes to the Stones and their music.

Remember when voting, that it’s the entire video we are voting on here, and not just the song/music. The video will be linked to from the voting booth as usual so you can watch it before you vote. Make sure to take the time to watch the video before you vote, to refresh your memory of it. The link to the video can also be found here in this thread (above)

So how do you rate this “unofficial” video? To vote, just click on: Stones Weekly Poll, and when you get to this page, choose “Poll 1” to vote on this question.

The second Stones poll is where we run the Stones album VS matchups, and this week's question asks this: Goats Head Soup vs Bridges To Babylon, which album do you like the best?

vs

For this week we bring back “The Soup Polls”, featuring Goats Head Soup, which is doing very well in these Stones' album matchups, sporting a winning record of 11-3, and good for 4th place in the standings. In this round it will go up against the 1990s Stones release of Bridges to Babylon. B2B isn't doing as well in these matches, with only 2 wins to its 11 defeats, which place it down near the bottom of the standings, in 21st place. B2B is also our least voted on album in this series (other than the newest released Stones LP Blue and Lonesome), so it does have a bit of room to improve in this series, but it is up against a fan favorite this week.

To see the song list for each album, for Goats Head Soup, click here: GHSand for Bridges To Babylon, click on: B2B

To cast your vote in this second Stones poll, just click on: Stones Weekly Poll, and when you get to this page, choose “Poll 2” to vote on this question.

At the first Stones poll last week we answered this question: Rate the Rolling Stones official video for “Waiting on a Friend” (Click here for the video)

The poll results didn’t surprise me at all for this one, as I already knew this was a well-loved video and chances are you knew this too. If you didn’t, well a “10” was the top pick here with 23.8% of the vote. To see the full final results, click on here:Stones Weekly Poll - week 950, poll 1. The top results will also show up at the updated Stones’ Fans Top Picks, page 2 , with past videos that we have voted on in the last 2 years listed as they always were, but now found at the very top of the page, and, just added in this week by me, direct links to the videos we voted on, so you can see exactly which video the ratings apply to (since there are more than one videos made for several of the songs listed).

Looking back at last week’s second Stones poll, the question was: Beggars Banquet vs A Bigger Bang, which album do you like the best?

vs

Now, once again and for the fourth week in a row here, I’m gonna again get into repeating myself here for the Stones VS poll results, since the very same words apply yet again… “I think you all know which album won last week, guess the only question is by just how much of a landslide it won by”.

The reason this keeps happening now and didn’t happen as much in the past, is that back when the Stones’ album VS poll was still new, I placed the best Stones albums up against each other, and now as we are well past the half way mark in this very long running series, well, the best of the band’s albums are now going up against the least liked albums, which I avoided asking back in the early days. That’s just the way it is, there’s only so many matches left, and we do want to match up all of the LPs before week 1000 gets here in the next 49 remaining weeks, right?

To see by how big a landslide BB won by, just click here:Stones Weekly Poll - week 950, poll 2. Plus, I’ll add the results from this poll to the standings at the Stones VS Page 1, where at the top of the page you can check out the updated standings on how each album has done in these long running VS polls.

Over at the Classic Rock Poll, we enter week 591, and just like as we do at the Stones poll, we vote in 2 poll questions a week in this one too. The first poll’s question this week asks the following question in week 3 of this multi-week series: Of the solo artists who were in a major band/duo first, and then went solo, who had the best solo career? (Part 3 of 4)

The last week on us voting on and choosing the artists who will survive to see round 4 next week. Once again, another great list of great artists to choose from, in fact, this one looks like the best one of the 3, not that I planned it that way. I do try to even these lists out when we have multiple parts to them, but looking at the list for tonight’s poll, well I could vote for about 10 of the artists listed this week! So it ani't gonna be any easier to pick just one out of this bunch of 26 performers, this week.

Now again, as I noted last week… do not vote for your favorite artist listed, vote for whoever you feel had the best solo career out of the bunch listed. This is one of those questions where you don’t even have to like the artist to vote for them if you think they had the best overall solo career. To cast your vote in this poll, click here: Classic Rock Poll, and when you get to this page, choose “Poll 1” to vote on this question.

At the second Rock poll this week, known better as the Rock VS poll, we will vote on this question: “I Want Candy”: The Strangeloves' original vs Bow Wow Wow's cover, which version is better?

vs

The Strangeloves were yet another one of those fake groups that was needed to be put together, because a song that was made by a nongroup, became a big hit. "I Want Candy" was written by the well-known songwriters Bert Berns, Bob Feldman, Jerry Goldstein and Richard Gottehrer in 1965. All 4 of them were also well known producers, and the trio of Feldman, Goldstein and Gottehrer decided to record this song themselves instead of giving it away to some artist, and they took on the moniker of "the Strangeloves", augmented by studio musicians. They claimed that the Strangeloves were actually three Australian brothers (and ex-sheep farmers) named Giles, Miles and Niles Strange. Feldman, Goldstein and Gottehrer dressed up in shaggy wigs and exotic clothing for publicity photos as the Strangeloves. But of course, the song turned into a big hit and a real band was needed to play live dates at this point. This wasn't the first time such a thing happened in rock music (remember the song "Na Na Hey Hey Kiss Him Goodbye" by the fictitious band called "Steam"? Well, the same thing happened there). So they ended up recording 5 more songs and because this "band" was in demand, at first the trio actually played the first few gigs themselves, and they even went as far as using fake Australian accents when interviewed!. But they weren't performers, nor did they want to be performers (or actors for that matter), so a group was put together in late 1965 to play the next set of live dates, which ended up being composed of the four session musicians who had actually recorded the music to The Strangeloves' 5 songs. By '66 that group of musicians was replaced by 4 other musicians for the next tour in '66. So yes, the The Strangeloves were actually never a true band at all and instead were different musicians and songwriters pretending they were some bunch of brothers from Australia. Those were the days indeed!

This song was later covered by several different artists, with the New Wave band Bow Wow Wow having the most success with it in 1982, in Europe anyway, where it made the top 10 in the UK at #9. It didn't fare as well in the U.S. where it reached only #62 on the charts. But thanks to the new MTV channel, which played the song often, it became as well known as the original, even if it sounded exactly the same as the original. Let's face it, most New Wave bands sucked and weren’t at all "new" in the kind of sound that they made what-so-ever, other than most such bands didn't really know how to play their instruments. But that didn't seems to be the case here with this single and the group who put it out, Bow Wow Wow, even if the same exact sound and singing mode was applied to their version of the song, it seemed to have a better lead guitar to it, and the female singer, all but 16 years old, didn't really sound that bad, since the song seemed better suited for a gal to sing than a 3 guys. Yet this cover was still almost exactly the same as the original.

To vote in this poll for the better of the 2 songs, just click on Classic Rock Poll, and when you get to this page, choose “Poll 2” to vote on this question.

In last week’s first Rock poll, we asked: Of the solo artists who were in a major band/duo first, and then went solo, who had the best solo career? (Part 2 of 4)

The top artists to be picked in round 2, that will be in Part 4, were all close in the voting last week, other than the top pick, that being Michael Jackson, who of course was the lead singer in the Jackson 5 before going solo, and who was way ahead of the rest in votes cast, with more than double the votes of the second place vote getter John Lennon. As I noted last week, I’m not sure how many artists will end up in Part 4 of this poll’s final round, as It will depend on how many I decide to list in the final round – but all that are listed will come from the top results from weeks 1 thru 3, so although your votes all determine that, it as usual will depend on how large a number I want to go with in Part 4, and the holdup is that so many artist have gotten so many votes so far in Parts 1 and 2 already. Normally I go with the top 8 picked from the first 3 weeks in a 4 part poll like this, but I’m thinking of cutting that number down to maybe the top 6 from the first 3 weeks this time, so there aren’t too many choices listed in Part 4. But the voting this time around have been all over the place so far, and as I usually don’t have this problem to deal with, for this series I do because of how the votes have finished up so far.

To see the final results from Part 2, just click here: Classic Rock Poll 1, week 590.

In last week’s VS Rock poll, we answered this question: “Ball and Chain”: Big Mama Thornton's original vs Janis Joplin's cover, which version is better?

vs

Close voting in this one for sure. To see which singer was chosen, just click here: Rock Poll 2, week 590 You can also check out the final results at the VS Classic poll results page 2, at the Classic Rock site, by clicking here: VS Page 2, List Page 10.

We close out this poll post as usual with the Beatles poll, where we enter week 344 and ask this brand new question: A Hard Day's Night vs Help!, which Beatles' movie was better?

vs

Here's something that we never compared before at the Beatles poll. We have in the past asked which Beatle movie was our favorite, back in 2011, and A Hard Day's Night was picked, but we never put the Beatles movies up against each other in a VS poll... until now.

A Hard Day's Night was of course the first Beatles movie made, back in the summer of 1964 and it was a major hit, just like everything else the Beatles ever did, and it is credited to being what started and lead to modern day pop music videos.

Then in the summer of 1965, their second movie, a comedy called Help!, was released, and like the first Fab movie, it too was a major hit and also credited to help start up pop music videos. Both films were directed by Richard Lester and again were both major hits. But which one did you like better?

To vote in this poll, please go here: Beatles Weekly Poll.

In last week's Beatles poll we asked: Magical Mystery Tour vs Please Please Me, which album do you like the best?

vs

The final week of "the Mystical and Magical Polls”, which featured the Beatles 1967 Magical Mystery Tour album. To see the final results, just go there: Beatles Weekly Poll – week 343. Or, you can check out the Beatles current album VS standings and past matchups at the: Beatles Albums page , which is located at the domain’s Lennon Site.

Well that does it for another poll post! This week in Colorado the ski season got underway, even if the weather here has been on the mild side all week long during the day time. But these days all it talks is just a bit of snow and cold nighttime temps to get the snow machines going. I recall when I moved here 40 years ago; whereas the ski areas in the eastern U.S., where I was from, had snow making machines, as they had to if they wanted to be open by the end of November. Yet Colorado didn’t have any such machines back then and they boasted and advertised that point, that the skiing here was 100% natural snow and not man made, and they still were open by the end of October each year anyway. But now the mighty dollar controls everything, well that and a demand by skiers to be at the first to open resort, so now most of the resorts here use such machines. The closest ski resort to where I live, the Monarch Ski area, up on Monarch Pass, still doesn’t use them, and it’s one of the last in the state not to. Good for them!

I thank all of you for voting each week in our 5 weekly polls!
