I've always considered stability in a group a favorable attribute, and I love that for the most part the Stones keep the same side musicians tour after tour. (Lisa left, and of course we lost Bobby.)
As Gomper suggested, two categories: core members, side musicians.
I always thought of Darryl though as closer to the core of the group, since that core always had a bassist from the start. As with Chuck, no.
Sure Ian Stewart was there from the beginning, but they've also used Nickey Hopkins, Billy Preston, Ian McLagan on tours, and a number of additional others in the studio.
Well, 🤷♀️ I don't know. I just thought "official tour member" might have been a solution. It's not so much about contribution (Did Darryl contribute more than Bobby Keys?). It's more about what position a player plays. DJ plays the bass in a guitar group where he replaced BW.
Even Keith acknowledged, more than once, that DJ needs more recognition.
