RE: RE: RE: RE: RE: RE: Dunkirk

1940 was grim time time for this Island Ijasa, it would be another year before the Soviet Union joined the conflict, and a year and a half before the United States entered.

It is often said that in those dark days that Britain stood alone against Nazi Germany. To an extent that is true but as you have said, there were French troops rescued from the beaches of Dunkirk as well, and they were saved to fight the Nazis on another day. That is true also for troops from the 'Low Countries' who were also plucked from the shore.

Only months after Dunkirk the 'Battle of Britain' commenced in the skies over mainly SE England. Had that battle been lost then the chances are that the U.K. would have been invaded. It's worth pointing out that in that battle it was the Polish squadron of the R.A.F. who shot down more planes than any other squadron. Of course when hostilities broke out, troops came from every part of the then British Empire to fight for dear old 'Blighty', and ensure that Mick would sing in English rather than German. A good thing too, 'Ich kann mich nicht zufrieden geben', just doesn't have that ring to it, I'm sure you'll agree....... So only to an extent did Britain stand alone.

I agree with you that 'Stalingrad' was the turning point of the war. The Red Army inflicted the biggest defeat on the Nazi's and their allies. It wasn't just Germans that they fought and destroyed of course, Italian, Hungarian, Romanian armies were all decimated, as was a Croat force fighting with the 'Wehrmacht'. But, the capture of the WHOLE German 6th army was decisive. From there across a broad front the Red Army chased the Germans back to the streets of Berlin........I hear there is strong support in the city to have 'Volgograd' revert back to the name 'Stalingrad', quite right too.

I don't know if you've read Anthony Beever's 'Stalingrad' Ijasa, but I would recommend it if you haven't. It's probably the most thoroughly researched book I've ever read, the facts and figures of 'Stalingrad' are staggering, as they are for the whole war across the Soviet Union.

Btw just on that Britain standing alone thing......I was talking to my old mother not that long ago about the war, and her memories of it. She was almost 11 in 1939 when Britain declared war on Nazi Germany. Her memory is that at no point does she recall ever picking up any sentiment or feeling that Britain would ever lose.
