Exactly! He had his great nights, yes indeed.
My wife Sue saw the Doors before she ever met me, and said he put on one of the best rock shows she ever saw. So yes, it just depends on when you saw him. But the fact that he also had some real bad nights (and there were several of them), I can't see voting for him in this poll if only for that reason. Every frontman will have a bad night or 2, but not several of them.
Yet this reminds me of what rock photographer Philip Kamin said to me once about Mick Jagger. Philip took thousands of concert photos of every major rock act of the '70s and '80s, and he went on 2 different tours with the Stones (one in the U.S, and one in Europe), where he saw every single show on those 2 tours. He noted to me that all of the bands he ever saw would have a night or 2 where that all of their members would have an off night. This included all of the Stones members (on different nights that is) where either Keith, Ronnie, Bill, Mick Taylor and or Charlie had an off night. But he noted that Mick Jagger never once did, he was on every single night for every single show, and MJ was the only artist he could say that about, including Paul McCartney, who he is friends with. Guess I should note that Philip isn't a big time Stones fan either. He's a classic rock fan who likes the Stones no more than any other rock act. So him saying that means something indeed.
