Of course they were #2, and the Stones even said they were themselves (there are interviews on TV that are now in Stones docs where they flat out say it).
You are the first person I ever heard that from, but, you were not alive in the '60s either to experience what was going on back then, and you had to be there to understand what was happening. Everybody alive in those days, include all rock fans, know the Stones were #2. Plus the Stones were looked at as followers and a band who copied the Beatles, something they didn't care to be known as, but there was truth to it, too. The differences between the 2 bands that you just noted were not noticed by fans in the 1960s, even if they were there and some what true.
