Just because Lennon was bold, daring, clever, sharply opinionated, creative, and blessed with one fine voice doesn't mean he was a genius! It just means he was all those things. How many musicians have done exactly what he did, and more, and never gotten any 'genius' recognition? Guys like Eno, or Lou Reed, or Frank Zappa, or Brian May, or Thom Yorke, just to name a tiny few? Lennon simply had the platform from fame (that he used rather clumsily and amateurely, imo) and the enduring legacy that comes from death. Yes, he was special but he was not a genius. He didn't have the kind of musical mastery or the insight of a true "student" of music in the way of--say--Brian Jones or say George Harrison...or Jack White. He was certainly the leader and certainly had a recurring gleam of sparkling wonder in some of what he did, but he simply was just not a genius. And I'm sure he would agree, at least when in one of his more somber moods (because as we know, he could be an arrogant snot too!).
Anyway, this is not meant to knock him, just to clarify a point that might be not get as much exposure, at least in some corners of the internet. Seriously, I love the guy!--just as I love all my weird idols in all their flawed and not-quite-genius-wonder.
