I think the only real problem is that it isn't a rock song at all, and that is why some rockers aren't into it. I'm not crazy about it, but it's okay, and different, too, and that part I do like.
Last nite I got to see that special on the making of Sgt. Peppers that PBS has been showing a few times this past week. It's very good if you haven't seen it, but in this doc they make like this song is one of the best ones on the LP, claiming how it totally fits into the album.
For the record, George is indeed the only Beatle playing on this song, singing lead, and playing the wonderful sounding tambura, sitar, and acoustic guitar.
