Back to Ringo. A master of timing, subtle fills, and one of the best hi-hat players in the history of pop music. He was so good as a drummer that hardly anyone even noticed, which ironically must have been the intent. Other drummers notice however, as did George Martin back in '62. That's because he performed with a band that put the songs first, vocals and rhythm second, and up front instrumental prowess last. So Keith Moon he was not, which turned out to be good for the Beatles but that's another discussion. Spare tight playing, not to mention discipline, often gets overlooked. But boy, case in point, it does sell a lot of records. It's amazing that it took so losing for people to realize how fantastic a bassist McCartney was. But like others who know what notes to play, what to leave out, and when to create space, top notch playing combined with subtlety contributes to the whole and doesn't always call itself to attention. What some attribute as weakness to The Beatles and other song-oriented bands is perhaps their greatest strength.
