It has been stated by pretty much all of the Beatles, and all of the Stones, that they were all close friends and there wasn't any competition or rivalry at all between them. Period. Only the newspapers said there was. I believe it was Mick who said it was actually the opposite, that the Stones and Beatles worked together and made sure that they didn't released new material at the same time to avoid all of that. So it was only the press that made up that stuff, but it clearly wasn't true at all, the 2 bands were just friends with each other and nothing more. If the Beatles were so much in competition with the Stones, John and Paul won't have gone out of their way to write the Stones first hit single for them, if that was the case.
In closing, the Beatles had no rivals, yes, the Stones were #2 to them in the '60s and the Stones seemed to be happy with that fact, it was more of an honor to the Stones to be looked at as being second to the best musical group ever to happen.
