B&L/ABB/GHS/OOOH/Frontmen/MR/Overplayed Fabs

Time for our weekly poll post, as we enter week 932 of the Stones poll at this time. For the last 3 weeks at the main Stones poll we been looking at the new LP Blue and Lonesome, released last December.

Since it's time to start up a brand new Stones album VS series this week, and we only got 7 LPs left that haven't hosted a series yet, I'll take what will become week 4 of asking questions about the new LP and have it host the Stones album series this time around. BTW, the other 6 LPs not to host a round of this series yet are: 3 '60s albums - TRSN, Aftermath, and ENHM, along with TY and ER from the '80s, and from 1993, B2B. Before we hit week 1000 in the Stones poll I expect all of them will have hosted at least one round by then... but time is running out for me to get to them I guess, too!

Anyway, this week’s first Stones poll question ask this: Blue and Lonesome vs A Bigger Bang, which album do you like the best?

vs

This is not only B&L's first time hosting the series, but the first time it shows up in it period. I just wanted to make sure all us Stones fans knows it well enough before I place it head on against the other Stones albums, and after the great turnout of voters in the last 3 weeks with poll questions asking about this LP, I can see that is clearly the case.

Now I do have to name this new series, since they all got their own names, so this one will be called simply "The blue polls". For week 1 of this blue poll, we should see a great matchup with the last 2 studio albums released by the Stones going head to head. They are very much different from each other; with B&L a 100% blues cover LP, while ABB is a 100% pure Stones rock album.

Again, since this is the first time B&L has appeared in this long running battle of Stones albums, its record is of course 0-0, while ABB has a 6-8-1 record and is in 16th place in the standings.

To see the song list for each album, for Blue and Lonesome, click on: B&L, and for A Bigger Bang , click here: ABB.

To cast your vote in this first Stones poll, just click on: Stones Weekly Poll, and when you get to this page, choose “Poll 1” to vote on this question.

The second Stones poll is where we normally run the Stones album VS matchups, and we will still do that this week, since each week we bring back an older series from this poll to join in the battle once again. So this week’s second Stones poll question is: Goats Head Soup vs Out Of Our Heads, which album do you like the best?

vs or

This week for the regular VS poll series, the Soup polls return, featuring the 1973 album, Goats Head Soup. GHS is doing pretty good in theses matchups’, sporting a 9-3 record, and that lands it in a tie for 6th place. The album it’s tied with just happens to be Out Of Our Heads, as it has the very same 9-3 record.

To see the song list for each album, for Goats Head Soup , click on: GHS, and for Out Of Our Heads, click here: OOOH. BTW, and as I usually note when this comes up, since there’s 2 different releases of OOOH, the UK version, and the US release, just go by whichever version you know best when you consider your vote.

To cast your vote in this second Stones poll, just click on: Stones Weekly Poll, and when you get to this page, choose “Poll 2” to vote on this question.

At the Stones two polls last week, well not a bad turnout at any of the polls last week considering it was a major holiday week for those of us in the U.S. The first Stones poll asked this question: Rate the artwork for the front cover of Blue and Lonesome.

Well, we might like this LP a lot, going from the poll ran 2 weeks ago, but most of us aren’t really too crazy about the artwork that goes with it, as the top vote was only a “6”, one of the lower ratings for a Stones cover, and we have rated all of them now. This seems to be a bad tread with Stones fans not caring for the artwork on the newer Stones releases. Anyway, out of the 52 album covers we rated, only 10 got a lower rating than B&L, including only 2 other studio LPs (SW and VL), with one album cover actually receiving a zero rating, that being the 2012 greatest hits album GRRR!

To see the full final poll results from this question, just click here::Stones Weekly Poll - week 931, poll 1. Plus, you can also check out the list of all the 52 album covers ratings picked by us fans for all of the other Stones LPs by going here: Ratings for the Stones Album Covers.

Looking back at last week’s second Stones poll, the question was: Beggars Banquet vs Aftermath, which album do you like the best?

vs or

A blowout in this poll last week, but that’s the case often when Beggars Banquet is in a match! The LP now sports a 10-3 record and sits alone in 5th place. To see by how much it came out on top, just click on here:Stones Weekly Poll - week 931, poll 2. Plus, I’ll add the results from this poll to the standings at the Stones VS Page 1, where at the top of the page you can check out the updated standings on how each album has done in these long running VS polls.

Now let’s head over to the Classic Rock Poll, where week 572 is upon us, and just like as we do at the Stones poll, we run 2 poll questions a week at this one, too. The first poll’s question will ask this: Who was/is the best frontman/frontwoman in rock? (Part 2 or 4)

Week 2 of this poll, and I got a feeling that now that the MJ voting is over with (until the last round, anyway), we might actually have some competition for this week's Part 2 of the question.

Now as I noted last week (well, barely), the question in the poll voting booth only shows the word “frontman”, but we aren't only looking for only frontmen, but at frontwomen, too. I’m just saving some room in the admin of the poll, which has been having some issues of late when I clog too many words in some of the poll fields, a crazy problem that I can’t figure out, but as long as the polls keep running correctly overall, that’s all that counts. So I'm only using the word "frontman" for now, for that reason. But once the poll is no longer running, all of that will be changed to "frontman/frontwoman" (as is already being shown in that matter on the webpages where it is listed, and in this post, since they aren’t a part of the poll's admin).

To vote in this poll, just click here: Classic Rock Poll, and when you get to this page, choose “Poll 1” to vote on this question.

At the second Rock poll this week, known better as the Rock VS poll, we ask this question: 'Midnight Rider': Original by The Allman Brothers Band vs original by Gregg Allman, which version is better?

With the sad passing of Gregg Allman in the last 2 weeks I wanted to remember him with a poll that was based on one of his best ever written songs. Gregg always felt most proud of 'Midnight Rider', a tune that he wrote mainly by himself, other than 2 lines that he got from a friend (Robert Payne). The story goes that Gregg was up late one late night with his friend, and after Gregg kept singing the very same lines from the newly written song over and over to his friend, while trying to find one more line for the song, and after asking his buddy how the line he kept repeating sounded, he got this reply back from his tired friend who was ready to go on home: "I'm beyond the point of caring, some old bed I'll soon be sharing" and Gregg answered back, "that's it!", with his friend replying, "that's what"? Gregg was a good enough guy to give his friend writing credit on the song, something most songwriters never do for coming up with just 2 lines only, especially since this guy wasn't even writing the song with him, but just talking to him. The other interesting thing was his friend never got to go home and go to bed that night, as Gregg wanted to go to the studio at that very moment to make a demo of the song, but after calling his producer so late at night, and being turned down for help, he had his friend go with him. The 2 had to break into the locked studio, and Gregg got his demo recorded in the early morning hours as the sun came up.

The crazy thing about this song, is today it's one of the favorite songs recorded by The Allman Brothers Band, as far as their fans go and not just Gregg, and yet when it was released in 1971 on their second album Idlewild South (the album is named after the farm house Gregg wrote the song in that night) and released as a single, it didn't even chart! Then 2 years later when Gregg rerecorded it alone for his solo album Laid Back, he released the reworked tune as a solo single and that version hit the Top 20 chart! There is for sure a difference between the 2 versions of this song, and although you hear both on the radio still today, you hear the Allman Brothers Band’s version more often, even if the solo version was the hit single. Just one last a note on this song, Willie Nelson covered it in 1980 and had the only Top 10 hit single with it, reaching #6 on the charts.

So which version of this song do you dig more? To make your pick and vote, just click on Classic Rock Poll, and when you get to this page, choose “Poll 2” to vote on this question, and yes, as usual, you will be able to hear both songs using the links provided in the voting booth, before you vote.

In last week’s first Rock poll, we asked: Who was/is the best frontman/frontwoman in rock? (Part 1 or 4)

The Rock poll saw over a 1,000 votes again last week, yet the total votes there were not even enough to place that total in the Top 10 most voted on polls, as this one poll is now seeing over a 1,000 votes cast every single week, so that’s cool to finally see at last, at least at one of our 5 weekly polls!

For Parts 1 thru 3 of this question we will take the top 8 songs each week and then revote on them in Part 4. Last week, thanks to Mick Jagger just running away with the win with major landside numbers (he finished first with 41.2% of the vote), we only had 6 rockers total who had enough votes to make it into the final round. Other than Ray Davies of the Kinks, who saw 9.4% of the vote, the others barely made it. They are: John Fogerty of Creedence Clearwater Revival (5.8%), Bon Scott of AC/DC (5.7%), David Gilmour of Pink Floyd (5.7%), and Tom Petty of Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers (5.6%). For the record, a poll choice has to see at least 5% of the vote to make it into the final round of any of our multi part polls.

You can check out the full, final results from this poll, by clicking here: Classic Rock Poll 1, week 571

In last week’s VS Rock poll, we asked: 'The 59th Street Bridge Song (Feelin' Groovy)': Original by Simon & Garfunkel vs the cover by Harpers Bizarre, which version is better?

This one was as close as any of our polls can get. To see which song came put on top, just click here: Rock Poll 2, week 571 You can also check out the final results at the VS Classic poll results page 2, at the Classic Rock site, by clicking here: VS Page 2, List Page 10.

We close out this poll post as usual with the Beatles poll, where it’s week 325, and this week’s brand new question asks this: Which one of the following Beatles songs is the most overplayed on the radio?

Guess it depends on where you live as to what song you will go with. I got more than half of these songs from a couple of lists on the internet, and a few of these songs I had to think to myself along these lines of thought, that no way "Michelle" is overplayed on the radio, I haven't even heard it in ages. Yet I'm sure in some cities I bet it is overplayed. That makes me think, do they play "Michelle" on the radio too much in France? After all it's got a bit of the French language in it, so you would think that would be a reason for them to play it often, or too often. But then again, maybe not? Perhaps one of our French Gassers could answer that.

We got 25 songs to choose from for this poll (yes, that’s it), not that many, since for me anyway, maybe only one of these 25 songs are overplayed on the radio today, and it’s one of my favorite Fab songs, too. But I just never grow tired of the Beatles!

So which one song have you heard too much on the radio? To vote in this poll, go here: Beatles Weekly Poll.

In last week's Beatles poll we answered this question: Which of George Harrison's three Beatles Raga songs is your favorite?

Close voting in this poll all week. You can check out which song came out on top, here: Beatles Weekly Poll – week 324. Or, you can check out the Beatles miscellaneous list page to see the results here: Beatles Miscellaneous Poll Page.

Well that does it for yet another week’s poll post! As usual I like to close this post out with a big “Thank You” to all who take part in the voting in our polls, especially with last week being a major holiday week in the U.S. I’m happy that most voters didn’t take off from voting, as our vote tallies weren’t down that much at all, just a small bit. I do hope that all of you have a great upcoming week ahead!
