Yes and no.
Yes, without the Stones, MT would not have ever gotten to be as big as he got. The Stones don't owe him anything at all, other than again, some writing credits, and yes, you are mistaken if you think that he can't write songs, it is clear that he can write from the solo songs he put together.
he just walked away for bigger and better things
This part is totally not true. He walked away and didn't even try to record anything else at first after he left the Stones, for several years. He left because he got hung up in the lifestyle of the Stones and didn't like it. He left because he wanted to become clean again - like he was before he join them and stated to do hard drugs. That's why he left and that's what he did for several years after - pretty much nothing - during the mid to late '70s and early '80s, other than one solo LP around 1980 that he put out, nobody even heard from him for the most part until he went back on tour with Dylan in '84 (okay, he did do a few shows around '82 with Ten Years After before that). But when he ran out of money in the early '80s, that was when he had to hit the road again. But he left the band because he didn't want big things, he wanted to just get back to a slower pace of life.
