I think some other acts have outsold the Stones as well. AC/DC comes to mind. However, I am quite certain that a full reckoning shows that no other band has earned more money than the Stones. They are the most commercially successful music band in all of history. There money comes from albums, concert tickets, TV rights, merchandise, and more.
But all this aside, artistic greatness does not require recognition to, in fact, be great. I think some great music has been made but not been widely heard or sold. I also think a lot of great and once recognised music has been forgotten.
