That isn't how I remember the Stones, nor how the story is told in the UK during the '60s. In the early days in the U.S., it was Mick and Brian as the main faces of the Stones. From what I've read, it was pretty much the same way on the other side of the pond. Keith took a back seat, at least fan-wise in the '60s; he didn't come around to being the fan favorite of the band until around 1970 or so, when he overtook Mick in fan appeal. Not to say that MJ wasn't still loved by fans anymore, just that Keith took over as being the most loved Stone around that time.
In PF, when Syd was in the band, he was looked at as being the main man in the group, no question about it. After he imploded, then it was David and Rodger, but they never were looked at as being true giants in the band, either, even if they were.
