Well, they were definitely the major US competition for the Beatles and Pet Sounds is a great album. Hard to say if they were the major rivals overall. Maybe the pop songs they made with multi-layered harmonies were more similar to the Beatles? The Stones never really sounded much like the Beatles. On the other hand the early surf stuff by the Beach Boys was nothing like the Beatles either. Perhaps they became more similar by the time of Pet Sounds, Good Vibrations and the rest. Wiki says the BB have sold over 100 million records (or whatever) and the Stones over 250 million--but the Stones have been around a lot longer.
Overall, I would still say the Stones were the major rivals. I loved the BB at their best, but if you listened to a lot it could get a bit samey.
