Dylan was and has often been way ahead of the Beatles and the Stones, and thus everybody else! Those other two bands burst ahead of him too, at brief points in time, but few musicians, if any, are better in the long run of history than Dylan. He is and has always been one seriously bitter, angry, resentful, ostentatious, arrogant, unnecessarily difficult, biting, and yes--consistent--personality for sure, but he is really truly breathtaking in his musical and lyrical abilities. Caveat: I hate what he's been up to the last several years, really hate it.
His best albums are Blonde on Blonde, Highway 61, Love and Theft, and Blood on the Tracks, and his live offerings from 1966 are nearly the equal of anything the Doors or the Stones ever did back in the day. (say what you will about the Doors, but for a few years there they were a live experience that almost couldn't be topped as far as the live experience goes).
But anyway, in answer to your question, Bob Dylan is just too good. Way too good.
