I can't help but think of Fleetwood Mac reading through this thread.

Oh yes, how could I forget Fleetwood Mac? Not only did the entire band change other than Mick and John (yes, Christine Perfect/McVie was there playing on a few songs uncredited on the first 3 LPs too (so she was on every album), but she wasn't an official member until after Peter Green left 3 years/albums later). But they went from a pure blues band to a pop-rock band, clearly they were a totally different band by '71 when Bob Welsh took over along with Bob Weston and Dave Walker, and then about 4 years later after they were all gone, they became yet another band when Buckingham/Nicks joined! Yet they were successful in each phase and they always kept the name, in part since the 2 guys the band was name after, were always there, yet they were never band leaders and it was never their band. Heck, some don't even know that John McVie wasn't even a original member of the group half named after him, he joined up a few months after they started out, after first turning down Green's offer to be the bassist and then joining up afterwards.... Then of course, who remembers the fake Fleetwood Mac? After the band unofficially broke up in '74, the band's manager claimed he owned the name and put a totally new band together and had them tour as "Fleetwood Mac", until a lawsuit by Mick and John and Christie put an end to all that.
