Agree, he never was into 6 string, yet he played bass like he was playing one. Funny and true what you say about the Stones, too, yet whenever Keith played bass, he also played in that matter, like he was playing a 6 string.... think of his heavy bass playing on SFTD, in that case it totally worked for the band. Plus one last note would be that Bill, another one of the greatest bass players in rock music, also was at first a guitar player, yet he didn't ever really play the bass guitar in that way, other than maybe on a song or two, like "19th Nervous Breakdown", and maybe on one or 2 of the disco songs that they recorded in the late '70s.
